In those forests it is that the inhabitants hunt "the wolf and the wild bear." They shoot foxes, too--anyone has a right to do that--as ferae naturae, and take the skin for a prize. Shooting a wolf is a more serious business and ensures a higher reward. As soon as one is tracked, a regular campaign is organised. For--le loup, c'est un animal mediant; Quand on l'attaque, il se defend. Hence he is not to be assailed except with the advantages of numbers and the resources of civilization duly ensured. Time was when the same price exactly was set in Ireland upon a wolf and a Roman Catholic priest. The same extravagant estimate is not now put on the beast in the Vosges. But twenty francs for a male, and thirty for a female is reckoned worth getting-. Females are put at a higher figure, as being, not more vicious, but more productive of danger, as bearing. Lamarche saw something of the Thirty Years' War. In 1636 its population was reduced to ten persons. It saw something also of the Dragonades. That bright-green spot among the orchards and market gardens still goes by the name of "le Jardin des Calvinistes." It yields well--for it was fertilised with the bones of massacred Protestants. There was a Barrois Mint once at Lamarche. And in one of its houses, still marked by a memorial tablet, was born Victor Perrin, who subsequently became Due de Bellune, one of the first Napoleon's marshals, and in 1807 Governor of Berlin.
